In The Calling, Le’Shauna Phinazee is a fourth-year medical student from New York City. She was born in Harlem, but after her father died from gun violence, her family moved to the Bronx when she was seven. She attended public schools throughout high school. When she received an academic scholarship to attend Bowdoin College, she became the first person in her immediate family to attend university and majored in math while staying on the pre-med track. Prior to medical school, she worked at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Emergency Department as a business associate. Over the years, Le’Shauna has been involved with Mentoring in Medicine, an organization that works with youth from disadvantaged or low-income backgrounds and inspires them to work in health or science professions. She spends her fourth year applying to radiology programs outside of New York City, hoping to settle in a smaller city in the South. As a resident, she looks forward to exploring her career interests in musculoskeletal, breast, or interventional radiology. UPDATE: in Fall 2023 Le’Shauna began a residency in radiology at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC.
