On 24 February 2022, Yulia loses her former life as a chef and becomes a refugee, along with her two adopted daughters, fleeing the war in Ukraine. She now works as a butcher in Scotland and her husband is in one of the most dangerous spots on the frontlines. The fear and connection to war don’t leave her even when she is thousands of miles away. She is fighting for her children’s future, and she fears losing her husband.

Maria was born in Ukraine, Kyiv. Since 2019, she has been working as a documentary cinematographer. Previously, she was a 1AD and script supervisor on a Ukrainian TV series. In 2020, she embarked on the journey of creating a full-length documentary film, White Elephant, and served as the director, producer, and cinematographer. In the winter of 2022, due to the war in Ukraine, she became a refugee and relocated to Scotland. She was awarded a grant from the Scottish Documentary Institute to produce, direct, and shoot the film, The Sound of the Wind. The premiere took place at the Edinburgh Film Festival. With the onset of the war, she also produced a documentary film based on personal experiences titled, Breathing. This documentary narrates the story of the war in Ukraine from the very first moments of the invasion. The film received numerous awards at international film festivals. She was awarded Excellence in International Filmmaking and Best Editing at the Colorado Film Festival, where she participated in the film Breathing.
