The love story of Gloria Clayborne and renowned jazz pianist Junior Mance spans seventy years, with Junior playing alongside jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Dinah Washington, and Cannonball Adderley. But it’s not until 1996 that he meets his true love, Gloria. They marry, and she becomes his manager, with music at the heart of their life together.

In 2012, after Junior suffers a stroke and develops dementia, Gloria is faced with the reality that their time together is limited. Though his musical talent remains, she wonders who he will be without the music, and who she will be without him.

Filmed over ten years, SUNSET AND THE MOCKINGBIRD tells their story through Gloria’s perspective, structured loosely around her journal entries, much like the spine of a jazz composition.
