Before Woodstock and Coachella, there was the Newport Folk Festival. Between 1963 and 1966, the legendary festival became a gathering place for a generation coming into political and cultural consciousness, as traditional American music found new life alongside the emerging voices of social change. Through rare archival footage and firsthand reflections from artists including Johnny Cash, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, and the Freedom Singers, NEWPORT & THE GREAT FOLK DREAM traces a pivotal moment when music and activism converged. From protest songs and folk ballads to blues, gospel, and traditional forms, the film captures a vibrant musical landscape—and the ways it gave shape to a generation searching for its voice.
