Making Their Pointe

Director

Kamilah Thurmon

During segregation in Washington, D.C., African American ballet teachers built institutions of excellence in communities too often overlooked, training generations of young dancers in the discipline and artistry of classical ballet. Through unwavering commitment, they provided not only technical mastery, but also confidence, pride, and opportunity.

At a time when the world of classical ballet largely excluded them, these women created their own spaces — nurturing talent and expanding what was possible for Black ballerinas. Their influence extended far beyond the studio, shaping lives and building a cultural legacy that continues to resonate today.

Through intimate storytelling, archival material, and present-day reflection, MAKING THEIR POINTE honors the women who paved the way and the enduring impact of their work across generations.
