A narrative journey between two distant sister cities, JOURNEY(S): ADDIS TO DC honors the stories of Ethiopian women in America and Black women across the diaspora.

Inspired by Ntozake Shange’s acclaimed For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf (1976), JOURNEY(S) is a visual docupoem combining oral history, original poetry, animation, and archival imagery. This five-part anthology is a work of personal and creative inquiry, exploring identity, migration, memory, and the meaning of home.

Episodes 1, 2, and 3 of JOURNEY(S) will screen at DC/DOX.

Director, JOURNEY(S): addis to dc - Episodes 1, 2 & 3

Saaret E. Yoseph is a writer and artist from Washington, D.C. whose work blends poetry, documentary, and narrative storytelling. She connects personal questions to intersectional themes, exploring art and culture across the African diaspora and centering Black women in particular.

Saaret’s work has been featured on CNN, HuffPost, Voice of America, The Rumpus, The Root, and The Ethiopian Reporter. She has also received honors and support from the National Endowment for the Arts, HumanitiesDC, the Poetry Foundation, Firelight Media, and the Muses & Melanin Fellowship.

Her visual docupoem, JOURNEY(S): ADDIS TO DC, combines oral history, poetry, animation, and archival imagery to honor the migration experiences of Ethiopian women in America. Now touring, the project received Best Experimental Film at the KITFO Film Festival. Saaret released her debut poetry chapbook, A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO ENDINGS, in 2025. She is currently developing other narrative experiments, including the scripted drama-turned-novella series ABYSSINIA & HARLEM.
