As documentary filmmakers, we are often understaffed, under-resourced and without proper human resources support. Navigating thorny ethical questions can feel like walking in a dark forest without a compass. Introducing the Documentary Producers Alliance’s brand new Ethics Resources Library, this interactive panel will workshop ethical dilemmas that filmmakers faced during the production of their films and we will use resources from the library, providing a practical demonstration of its use. Join us for an urgent and honest conversation around ethics in the current documentary landscape.

Hailing from the Netherlands, Steffie van Rhee is a multimedia journalist turned documentary filmmaker and Emmy Award-winning producer. Located in New York, she tries to combine her background in journalism with her love for documentary storytelling, finding the roots for stories in extensive research. She believes that sharing people’s personal stories can catalyze (social) change and create a deeper understanding of different experiences.

Her recent credits include co-producer of Love Machina, co-producer of Netflix original six-part documentary series Race: Bubba Wallace, about NASCAR’s only Black driver, and producer of AMC+ documentary All of Them Witches, directed by Mona Panchal. Steffie is also the co-producer of Battleground, about the fight for the future of abortion in America, by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Cynthia Lowen and the associate producer of Lowen’s previous feature documentary Netizens, about three women fighting back against online harassment. She is currently producing Earth to Michael (directors Nico Lopez-Alegría and Zach Zuckerman) alongside producer Dustin Nakao-Haider.

Additionally, Steffie is an active member of Brown Girls Doc Mafia, NYWIFT and the Documentary Producers Alliance, where she serves on the Ethics Resource Library Subcommittee.
