Documentaries have further reach than ever before thanks to the streaming age. Public media has always been a leader for documentary production and continues to provide innovative storytelling for audiences nationwide. For many, producing and distributing for public media may seem daunting, with editorial and funding standards and practices unique to public media. There is a path for filmmakers new to public media. Gain insight on local and national production and distribution from varied and knowledgeable professionals in the field, including what they are looking for in an acquisition, what they want to hear in a pitch, and the distribution options available. This panel will showcase best practices, share helpful anecdotes, and be a general guide for those who want their programs on public media.

Senior Director, National Project Management, WETA National Productions, WETA

Kate Kelly is Senior Director, National Project Management, WETA National Productions, and a project executive or producer on numerous productions for national PBS audiences. At WETA, Kate manages key processes throughout the national production portfolio, including with Florentine Films, Inkwell Media/McGee Media, the Well Beings health campaign, and other projects. Since joining WETA in 2005, Kate has worked on more than 100 national public media projects produced by WETA, running the gamut of programming genres, from health, news and public affairs, to history, culture and performance — many of them award-winning projects and top-rated documentaries and series on PBS.

Director of Content, WHUT Howard University Television

Angela “Angie Ange” Hailstorks is a former nationally syndicated radio host turned multi-media executive currently serving as Director of Content at WHUT- Howard University Television PBS. A graduate of Howard University and Prince George’s County, MD native, Angie has created original content with an emphasis on local storytelling across multiple platforms.

Notably, Angie co-created AMPD 365, a digital-first artist performance platform that amassed a following of over 100k and reach of over a million impressions, which led to partnerships with META. Angie also created WHUT’s digital-first local storytelling series Decades, which has over a million impressions across digital platforms. Angie has executive produced numerous original programs for WHUT, including The Golden Year: Howard Women’s Basketball, Who’s The REAL HU? and Beyond The Water: Howard University Swimming & Diving Team in partnership with MPT’s HBCU WEEK NOW initiative.

Angie continues to use her brand equity in the Washington, DC market and beyond to amplify WHUT, public media, and storytellers while leading the charge for traditional media to innovate in digital spaces.

VP, TV Programming & Operations, WETA

Devin Karambelas is the Vice President of Television Programming and Operations at WETA, the flagship PBS station serving the nation’s capital. Devin was previously the Senior Programming Manager at GBH, Boston’s PBS and NPR station, where she co-directed programming and multiplatform content strategy across GBH’s local channels and for the national nonfiction WORLD Channel. She has been a jury member for the International Documentary Association (IDA) Awards, the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival and other documentary festivals and markets. Devin earned her Master of Science in Film, Exhibition & Curation from the University of Edinburgh in 2016.

Managing Director, Content Maryland Public Television

Troy Mosley joined MPT in the fall of 2022 as managing director of the statewide public television network’s Content Division. Mr. Mosley manages the full range of MPT-produced regional and national content, both broadcast and digital, and supervises an award-winning team of producers and production staff. He brings to MPT extensive experience managing and producing large-scale television content ranging from news and public affairs programs to music and variety specials, concerts, sporting events, and awards shows. Mr. Mosley came to MPT from WETA in Washington, D.C., where he contributed his talents in a variety of production and management capacities during nearly a decade with the public TV station. His assignments at WETA included co-managing the weekly live broadcasts of Washington Week and managing performance specials and packaging documentaries for air, such as Korea: The Never-Ending War, Making Black America, and The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song. Prior to that assignment, he served for 10 years as a producer, supervising producer, production manager, and executive producer at Viacom/BET Networks, working on a wide range of national and international music and awards shows, including the 5 0 t h Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery March & Music Special, The Soul Train Awards, the S a i n t Lucia Jazz Festival, and the Cayman Jazz Festival. He has also operated his own companies, Laureate Media and Positive Pictures, to provide production services for organizations staging live television events. Early in his career, Mr. Mosley worked at America Online as one of the original digital media producers for AOL’s news, sports, and weather channels. Mr. Mosley is a graduate of Southern University and A&M College, an historically Black college and university (HBCU) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He resides in Bowie, Maryland with his wife and family.

Director, PBS Plus

Michael E. Tang is the Director of PBS Plus, a syndicated programming service from the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) for public television stations across the United States. Leading PBS Plus content programming and strategy, Michael oversees the national distribution of Austin City Limits, This Old House, Reel South, Motorweek and many other programs that Viewers Like You may already enjoy.

Prior to joining PBS, Michael was a producer with credits including: The Imagineering Story, League of Legends Origins, and Ella Brennan: Commanding the Table.
