In today’s fast-evolving documentary landscape, bringing a film from inception to audience requires navigating the growing influence of studios, streamers, and production heads who shape which stories reach viewers. This panel brings together filmmakers, production executives, and funders to discuss the essential ingredients for getting a project to the screen, and the behind-the-scenes dynamics that often happen out of public view. While celebrity-driven or true crime stories dominate the conversation, there’s also a strong commitment to groundbreaking work in science, public health, climate justice, and global conflict, which often push against current political and cultural headwinds.

From the filmmaker’s perspective, balancing artistic integrity with the commercial pressures of funders and distributors can feel like a tightrope walk. This panel will explore what it takes to create documentaries that not only stay true to a filmmaker’s vision but also resonate with decision-makers in an industry constantly shifting to meet audience demand. With insights from both sides of the process, we’ll discuss how filmmakers and “greenlighters” weigh risk, relevance, and resonance in deciding which films to support, and what it means to champion work that may not be “safe” but is essential. This will be a candid and energizing conversation about the power and responsibility behind documentary filmmaking today.
